Shannon Dent is a small town girl from upstate New York who moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to become a doula and study midwifery. She grew up watching her grandmother’s calm hands help over 300 women bring babies into the world. From the date of her grandma’s death, she knew that this work was a calling very close to her heart. She began to read every midwifery book that had been passed down to her. She attended numerous doula training and began her work. In her spare time, Shannon attends numerous midwifery training and seminars to bring midwifery standards into her practice. She has taught Bradley Childbirth classes, joined La Leche League meetings, attended various massage trainings and apprenticed with three of the most well-loved doulas in Charlotte. She brings a holistic style to her clients by catering prenatals around their specific needs. “If a mother is proficient in her nutrition, I see no point in taking an hour of her time lecturing her on things she already knows. We may brush up on it but we primarily spend the class going over the best labor positions and other topics that would benefit her most.” -Shannon Dent Shannon is trained in helping women achieve the natural childbirth they want. Even in a hospital setting, she works the art of ambiance to calm what is sometimes, a very stressful environment. She provides aromatherapy, music, massage, physical and emotional support. Many women want natural births but are afraid of the interventions in the hospital. Shannon educates the mom on her choices in a hospital setting so that she can feel educated and sure of herself before labor begins. “Natural births offer the greatest high that exists in this world. Many women describe it as a feeling of bliss that washed over them as they held their baby for the first time. Natural labors are quicker, more pleasurable, ensure less tearing, and a quicker recovery. It’s not that medicated births are bad, it’s that when women know the benefits of having a natural birth, any other way seems hardly an option.” -Shannon Dent
