"There is a secret in our culture, and it's not that birth is painful. It's that women are strong." - Laura Harm
I watched my grandmother as she was calm and present during my mother and aunt's births. She was a self-taught lay midwife and leader of La Leche League in rural Illinois. My aunts surrounded my mother, providing loving touch and words of comfort. I didn't realize until I grew older, that this kind of a birth, at home with loved ones, was not normal. In fact, they are very very rare with only about 1-5% of births occurring at home. I realize that many women are comfortable in hospitals and prefer to birth there. If you do, having a Doula is a good way to create a home-birth feel in a hospital. The same energy that got your baby in your belly is the same energy that will get your baby out of you. I hope that you are surrounded by loving people who believe in the natural magic of your womanly body to birth your child.
That my presence may add to your radiance is my only wish.
